How Franchising Works

By Sarah O'Connor
In today’s business world, franchising plays an important role. It’s defined as an agreement between a company who is franchising and a businessperson. The businessperson is given a license to sell the product or service of the company. Many women are choosing franchising as a way of opening their own businesses.

Although franchising is thought to be beneficial, there are some myths surrounding it. Before you buy a franchise, consider the truth about these myths. Some of the common franchise myths are:

1. You Can Own a Franchise Easily
Franchisees generally have to go through training by the franchisor in order to operate a franchise. Franchises often require long hours in order to run the business efficiently and successfully. In other words, you will have to work hard so owning a franchise is not easy.

2. A Franchise Makes Money Right Away
Some people consider franchises to be immediate money machines that will generate profit as soon as they begin the business. It’s not this easy, however. If you believe that you’ll make money right away, you should reconsider your final decision. Franchises usually take a minimum of one year to develop and turn a profit.

A franchisee should be prepared for both success and failure. Ultimately, you alone will be responsible for your mistakes as a business owner.

3. You Are the Boss of the Franchise
Keep in mind that owning a franchise does not mean that you are the only boss. You are accountable to the franchise company, so in that sense, they are the actual boss. You will not be making plans or decisions alone and if you do so, you could be placing your franchise license at risk. You will need to follow the instructions of the franchisor. Yet, the proven operating technique and system is also one of the major advantages of owning a franchise.

Sometimes buying a franchise can be easier than starting a completely new business, but there are many people who prefer to make all the decisions on their own. These people should think twice before buying a franchise.

Franchise Trends
One important trend in franchising that you should be aware of is buying multiple units. As a franchisee, you should possess only 10 franchises with 10 units each rather than having 100 franchises with one unit. Many franchises today are looking for people who can open several locations.

When thinking about buying a franchise, keep these myths and real information in mind to make a better choice.
