Is Franchising Right for You?

By Sarah O'Connor
Thinking about a franchise business? Franchising is not the right business for everyone, but if you want to work in an established system or have limited business experience, it may be the right business type for you. Franchise businesses are also a great way for women and men to earn money.

Franchising is a method of offering products or services where there are at least two levels of people involved. The franchisor is the first person and the franchisee is the second. An agreement binds these two individuals and it’s known as a “franchise,” but the term is also used to describe the business that the franchisee runs.

If you want to know if franchising is right for you, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you have strong motivation and will to succeed?
  • Do you believe in yourself?
  • Will you be able to encourage others?
  • Do you have any experience in this field?
  • Will you be able to promote your business and brand name?
You can also consider the following points in determining whether a franchise business is right for you.

Franchise Lifestyle
Does a franchise lifestyle suit your personality and situation? Do you have a support system in order to open a particular franchise? Do you have an accountant, attorney, banker, etc. for business help and assistance?

Customer Focus
Franchises need to be customer focused. Do you have previous experience and success in the field? Do you understand what your customers want and how you will deliver that product or service? Do you know how to handle customer conflicts?

Desired Goals
As a franchisee, you will need to set goals for yourself and for your franchise. Think about goals that you’ve made in the past and whether you’ve accomplished them. What difficulties did you face in meeting these goals? A franchisee is both responsible for setting the goals and for meeting them. There may also be goals set by the franchisor that you will need to meet. Examine your previous goals to see if you are able to meet goals set by others.

Decision Making
Franchisees are the leader of his or her teams. Do you have experience in making decisions for succeeding in business? Can you explain your decisions to others? How quickly do you make decisions?

Confidence and Self-Esteem
A Franchisee must have a strong personality and confidence in their abilities. Businesses may face struggles, particularly in the beginning, and franchisees must be able to weather those storms. Ask yourself if you will be able to maintain your confidence during these periods?

Using the questions and points above, you will be able to better determine whether a franchise is the right type of business for you.
