Setting Up Your Home Office

The Perfect Home Office
More individuals are setting up home offices today than ever before. As more and more people turn to home-based businesses, the need for home offices has grown. Today, home offices are more than a chair and desk in a cramped space or a basement. Today’s home offices may include computers, fax machines, internet connections, office furniture, facilities and products for shipping, and printers. Setting up a great home office is vitally important to any home business and can be placed in both large houses and in small apartments. Even if you don’t operate a home business, a home office is still important for organizing and carrying out household tasks such as paying bills and keeping track of important files.

Whatever your home office is used for, there are some important aspects to keep in mind as you consider and begin putting together your home office:

Find the
Right Place for Your Home Office:
Before you begin setting up your home office or buying furniture or supplies, you must decide where to place your home office within your house or apartment. Smaller spaces may present limited options for placement, but if you consider the layout carefully, you can adjust your living space to accommodate the office space. If you plan to spend a great deal of time in your office, a larger area, perhaps with a good view, will be desirable.   Once you’ve chosen where to put your home office it’s time to find the right furniture and equipment:

Workplace Design:
Before you set up your home office, make a plan for its design. Think about what you will be doing in your office and make a list of the equipment and products that you’ll be using in it. Design the workplace for convenience and efficiency. Consider aspects like temperature control, placement of telephone jacks, availability of light and deal with any problems that they present before you move anything in. You may want a hard surface under your chair so that you will be able to move easily in it and you may wish to have window treatments that allow you to control the amount of light coming in at different times of the day.

Convenience:
Paper work is an inevitable task within any office and you will want to make doing it as convenient and efficient as possible. Furniture, such as your desk and chair, is an extremely important choice in this aspect. The chair should have the proper back and arm support and be at the correct height for the desk you choose. Many stores sell ergonomic office furniture, which can make paper work an easier task. A keyboard which can be slid out and adjusted for different heights is useful. Make sure that your work surface has accessible space at a good height for your mouse as well.

Creativity:
You don’t need to spend a lot of money in order to set up your home office. Instead of spending a fortune, think creatively:
  • Use available space to its advantage. You may not have a great deal of extra space in your home or even have a separate room for a home office. Instead, utilize the space you have to its greatest potential.
  • Plan, plan, plan. Setting up a great home office requires a plan, whether written on paper or plotted out in your mind. Whether you have a large or small space, spend some time thinking about organization and how to accomplish this. Placing furniture and equipment in an organized and efficient way can also make it inviting and decorative.
  • Do it yourself. Do as much as you can to set up your office on your own. This will save you money and give you a great feeling of accomplishment.
  • Use the available resources around you. You may already have items that can be used in your home office. Pictures stored in the closet or garage can give your office some color and personality. Two filing cabinets and an old door or board can serve as a great desk. Use inexpensive materials and supplies for shelves, in-and-out boxes, and storage spaces.
Keep these ideas in mind as you create your home office and you’ll find that your home office is more affordable, convenient, and inviting that you could have ever imagined.
